Maternity Clothes Woes

When I imagined myself pregnant in years past,  I always imagined being a fabulously dressed, classy pregnant woman. But once I actually became pregnant, that fantasy was soon destroyed by reality. Maternity clothes SUCK!  Granted, there are a few stores that have really cute things. I'm in love with NineMaternity and A Pea in the Pod. However, they are really out of my budget. While, I could afford to just go a little crazy and buy a bunch of things, looking at it logically, is that the smart thing to do in the long haul? While I hope that I have more than one child, that may be all I ever have. And not only that, but who is to say I'll be the same size if/when I'm pregnant again? Is it really worth buying an entire wardrobe for? I just can't justify it in my mind. Not when I need things for my apartment, I need things for the baby etc.

So thus far I've invested very little in the dressing the bump. I bought 3 pairs of pants from Old Navy. I've been blessed at my job in the sense of, we don't have to dress business casual and can wear jeans every day if we please. So I bought a pair of skinny jeans, a pair of navy cords and a pair of boot cut jeans. I rotate between those and dresses that I pair with leggings or tights. Now, I'm not saying I look totally frumpy. It's just not that picture I had in my head.

I'm worried about the spring/summer seasons as well. I bought a pair of shorts from Old Navy as well ($8.00 on sale, couldn't pass it up), but that's all I have. I will probably invest in a few dresses and such but other than that, I'm really at a loss. I'll be at my biggest then and certainly won't be able to fit it any of my regular clothing. Some of my tops are REALLY flowy so I think they will work, but I'll still need some and I have zero bottoms to wear other than the shorts. I guess I can still wear my jeans, and I'm sure I will, but I am not fond of just being the "jean queen." Plus a lot of my tops do have a dressy feel that even pairing with heels, does not work with jeans.

Then there are the maternity pictures. I have a specific dress style in mind that I want and I cannot find it for ANYTHING. I want something that flows away from my bump, not something that clings to it. I also want a cap or short sleeve. Apparently those two elements just don't meet in maternity wear because everything I have found thus far is either fitted and/or is sleeveless. Even then, the choices are limited. Everything looks like work wear vs. a causal feel. Frustrating!!!!

The only success I have had is in finding my shower dress. That one I was able to find pretty easily. Now I just need to buy it before they're out of stock!

Needless to say, as much as I am loving being pregnant, I will be beyond thrilled when I can go back to my normal wardrobe!

  1. You should be able to wear a regular size sundress with a cute short sweater! They're cute and comfy!

  2. I shop non-maternity areas too. Maxi skirts and dresses are so cute on pregnant ladies. There are a bunch of nice ideas on pinterest.
